Auckland Chinese Presbyterian Church

About Us

ABOUT US

To know Christ and to make Him known among all generations of New Zealand Chinese.

.

The Auckland Chinese Presbyterian Church (ACPC) has started to proclaim the gospel in this city since 1923 and we are one of the oldest Chinese churches in New Zealand.

We gather together because we believe in the one true Lord - Jesus Christ; we also belong to the same ethnic group - Chinese. However anyone is welcome. We are quite diversified in our age and cultural backgrounds, yet we strive to learn from each other and accept mutually in the love of God. There are 3 main groups of members, the Cantonese, English and bilingual speakers. Members originate from Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, Malaysia and those born in New Zealand.

ACPC logoThe empty cross is a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus. Presbyterians believe that Jesus died on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins and then rose again. There is a large cross at the front of the sanctuary of most Presbyterian churches. The empty cross reminds us of the new life we have through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The burning bush reminds us of the bush that Moses saw (Exodus 3:2). It was burning but was not destroyed. Presbyterians are deeply committed to being the church, the Body of Christ, which can never be destroyed. The burning bush is also the symbol of Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand.

The silver fern is the national emblem of New Zealand. It reminds us that on one hand being a part of the universal church, on the other hand we are rooted in this piece of beautiful land.

Our Team

Nathanael LaiI was born and educated in Hong Kong. My home village is near Guangzhou (Canton), where the missionaries of Presbyterian Church of New Zealand built a church, a hospital, and a boarding school some 100 hundred years ago.

I was raised in a non-Christian family and never attended a Christian school (except the seminary!), and always consider it a miracle for such a man to become a pastor.

I married to Sunday Tsoi in 1990, and our beloved child Gabriel was born in 1994. I joined the pastoral team of Church of Christ in China Tuen Mun Church (congregational-presbyterian) in 1990 and had served there until moving to New Zealand in 2002.

Hobbies: reading, travel, table-tennis.

Involvement in the wider church:
1. Member of Executive Committee, Council for Asian Congregations, PCANZ.
2. Member of the Committee of Mission & Education, Presbytery of Auckland, PCANZ.
3. Visiting Lecturer, Carey Baptist College (Chinese Programme).

Graeme has been a committed believer since 1972. His transformation from a 'churchian' to a 'Christian' happened through a process of frustration with himself and with church.

God spoke to him through

Isaiah 43:18,19

"But forget all that. See I am doing a brand new thing. Don't you see it? I will make a road through the wilderness for My people?"

The new thing was Graeme himself!

His early years as a believer were shaped by the Navigators who taught him to dig deep into the Scriptures, to share his faith with others and to disciple them.

Eventually this led to working with students on the Auckland University campus where he lived and worked with Asian and Pacific students.

He is married to Diane and has two grown children, Matt and Kylie, all of whom love God deeply.

He is now a senior lecturer at Manukau Institute of Technology in Communication Studies and part time minister at Auckland Chinese Presbyterian Church.

He has worked at World Vision as HR Manager and PR Director, taught in secondary schools and worked as a Guidance Counselor.

For several years he was also on the staff of the Navigators leading a discipling and training programme among 20-30 year olds.

His great passion is "creating opportunities for people to grow". This has led to sports coaching, personal mentoring, and now a variety of projects at Manukau Institute of Technology and Auckland Chinese Presbyterian Church.

A life shaping verse for Graeme is

Zechariah 8:23

"In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue shall take hold of the robe of a Jew saying, 'Let us go with you for we have heard that God is with you.'."
